The first time you boot up your new computer there is a sense of cleanliness and speed. Over the course of time, adding and removing software and hardware, as well as adding and removing users, begins to take its toll on your computer. It’s not as fast as it used to be, it crashes more often, and is often bogged down. All of these troubles point to one task that needs to be attended to - cleaning your Windows registry.

Installing and uninstalling take its toll

Each time you install or uninstall a new piece of software, entries are made in the Windows registry. The same occurs with each hardware install or uninstall and user creation or deletion. Software downloaded from the internet can contain malware and this malware targets your registry. The continuous installation and uninstalling of these programs and devices will effect and corrupt the registry. Once the registry is corrupted, your computer will become sluggish, error-ridden and prone to crashing.

Don’t try it yourself

Many computer users experiencing these issues will try to manually repair the errors on their own. This can lead to very disastrous results and almost always creates more problems than what was originally in place. The Windows registry was not designed for the computer novice to tamper with. Taking a quick look at the registry will show thousands upon thousands of lines, most of which are undecipherable to your average computer user. Therefore, the best course of action is to utilize one of many registry cleaners available on the web.

Purpose of a registry cleaner

Registry cleaners will accomplish many things. A good program will back up your registry initially, affording you the option of reverting back to the saved version in case something goes horribly wrong (even with the best of software, this can happen).

Once your registry is backed up, the program will then go through your entire registry looking for any and all errors. At the completion of the scan, you will be presented with a list of the errors that were found. At this point you may either go through the list and choose what is to be repaired or you can opt to have the software do this automatically. It simply depends upon which registry cleaning software program you choose. In most cases, the best option is automatic scanning and fixing, taking the guesswork out of it for most computer users.

Another indication of a good piece of registry cleaning software is if it allows for automatic scheduling of scanning and repair. We often forget how important something like this can be and being able to “set and forget” it is a great feature to be able to implement.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, one of the disadvantages of having the ability to enhance our overall computing experience via added software is the inevitable effect it will have on the Windows registry. It’s always best to be safe rather than sorry so do your research, grab a good registry cleaning program and clean that registry on a regular basis.

A program takes an eternity to open, windows seem to take much longer to expand, and even minimizing your browser gives you a headache. However, it’s not time to buy a new computer yet! Instead, these are all symptoms of a Windows registry needing to be checked and fixed. Since the introduction of Windows 98, any computer running on the Windows operating system has a registry. Monitoring and cleaning this registry is essential to ensuring your computer runs smoothly and efficiently.

What is the Registry?

Very basically, the Windows registry stores all the settings and options for the operating system within a database. Any time you add or remove hardware, install or uninstall software and even when you add a new user, all the information and settings information is saved in this database.

Additionally, the registry is what allows you, the user, to see inside the operation of the system kernel. Over the course of time, all this installation and removal of hardware, software and user accounts will have an impact on the registry. In turn, these changes cause your computer not to work as efficiently as it should.

How to Fix the Registry

If you purchased your computer with Windows 98 or higher installed, it is equipped with regedit – a basic registry editing tool. If you are very computer savvy, this tool should be more than sufficient for fixing any registry errors. However, while most of us are capable of managing the everyday tasks of our computers, few are at the technical level required by the regedit program. In addition, regedit has its own share of bugs and is notorious for causing more problems than it corrects.

Fortunately, there are a vast number of programs to clean your registry available on the web. The best types are ones that are graphic user interfaced, making them easy to use. You may also want to choose one that runs regular checks on your computer to ensure that your registry stays up to par consistently.

How Does a Registry Cleaner Work?

Every registry cleaning program uses specific algorithms that are designed to scan the Windows registry. Once an error is found, it is stored in a list. Some programs will allow you to opt whether or not you would choose to repair the error, while other programs are set to scan automatically and then immediately repair the errors. Depending on how confident you are in your computer skills, you can choose the software accordingly. In addition, most of the available programs have a built in scheduler, allowing you can set your registry checks on a regular basis and ensure your computer is working at its peak at all times.

The Importance of Backup

No matter which program or style you choose, you should always ensure a backup is made of your Windows registry. There are always chances for mistakes to be made, and being able to reinstall a previously saved registry will prevent serious stress if something goes wrong.

Windows Error 80048820 is experienced by Windows MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. The error message may display on your computer screen when you start the messenger program or attempt to log in. The error displays as:

Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to MSN Messenger at this time. Please try again later.” The message box will also display the error 80048820.

What Causes Windows Error 80048820?

This error can be the result of a myriad of things. The most common causes of Windows error 80048820 are:

The DLL file “softpub.dll” is incorrectly registered, currupt, or missing.

Your PC system clock is incorrect - This will cause a conflict when trying to sync to the messenger server.

Your proxy server is incorrectly configured - This may also cause other browsing issues.

How To Fix Windows Error 80048820

First, verify that the system clock is set correctly.

Close any MSN Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, or legacy MSN Messenger applications that are running.

Double-click the clock that is displayed at the right side of your taskbar (typically located at the bottom of the screen).

On the Date and Time Properties tab, open the Internet Time tab. Windows Vista users will have to click Change Date and Time Settings when the calender is displayed.

Make sure the Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server is select. Windows Vista users will have to click Change settings… and then check the Synchronize with an Internet time server box.

Add time.windows.com in the Server box. Press Update Now, then OK to close the box.

If that does not fix Windows error 80048820 you will then have to re-register softpub.dll.

In the Start menu, select Run.

Type regsvr32 softpub.dll and press enter.

If you still experience the error when relaunching your messenger application you will then have to check to ensure your proxy, if there is one set up, is functioning properly. Alternatively, you could use a registry cleaner such as Registry Easy to Registry Fix to verify your DLL files.

Check your proxy by following the steps below:

In the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Locate the Connections tab.

Click LAN Settings.

Clear the check-box labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections). Then click OK to close the window.

If you have tried all of the troubleshooting options above and are still experiencing Windows error 80048820 you may want to run a registry cleaner, such as Registry Easy or Registry Fix, to ensure that you do not have any underlying system errors that are to blame.

There are a myriad of programs out there that claim to be able to “optimize” your computer (Registry Easy, for example). If you aren’t a computer wizard and hence have no idea what it means to “optimize” your computer you may not be fully aware of what that means. Have no fear, for we are here!

What It Means to Optimize Your Computer

Optimizing your computer is actually a fairly simple process assuming that you have all of the know-how and the tools to do so.

Optimizing your computer is as simple as deleting vestigial system files, cookies, and DLL files; cleaning your computer history and search preferences; deleting old/never used programs; turning off unnecessary features; removing viruses, spyware, malware, or other resource hogging infections/programs; defragmenting your hard disk; cleaning system errors.

Most, if not all, of those processes can be handled if you own a high-quality registry cleaner, such as Registry Easy or Registry Fix. If you don’t you may be able to find freeware/shareware programs on the internet that will perform those tasks for you. Microsoft Windows has included a disk desgramenter in every version of Windows since Windows 95, you DO NOT NEED TO BUY ONE.

“Why Should I Optimize My Computer?

This is the million dollar question, isn’t it? The most common question that people ask in relation to system optimization is, of course, why should they do it. Fair enough, as for those who aren’t computer-savvy (or for those who simply don’t know what benefits it offers) it may not seem like a big deal to have a computer that is optimized.

Essentially, optimizing your computer will allow it to run as efficiently as possible. This ensures that programs load quickly, Internet browsing is fast, and that your computer is generally more responsive overall. The difference between double clicking a program and having it open right away (as opposed to having to wait for the computer to “load”) is usually having your computer optimized.

Optimizing your computer will:

Increase how fast programs load and close - By defragmenting your hard disk, along with cleaning out all of the junk on your computer, your computer will load programs faster.

Reduce runtime errors - Part of the optimization process includes a thorough error-cleaning (if you used a registry cleaner, such as Registry Easy). This will reduce how many errors you experience when using your computer.

Turn on and shut down faster - Since programs load faster your boot-up time will be reduced.

Keep your computer healthy and functional - An optimized computer is free of errors, loads quickly, and generally lasts longer than a computer that has been allowed to fall into disarray.

Can You Optimize Your Computer Yourself?

Of course you can! Many computer specialists will charge you several hundred dollars to optimize your computer, but with little more than a good registry cleaner and an anti-virus you can handle the task on your own!

Optimizing your computer is easy. Follow these general steps:

Clean out any spyware, malware, and viruses - Use a reputable anti-virus, such as Norton Anti-Virus or AVG, to clean out viruses. Then, use a program like Registry Easy, Registry Fix, or Registry Genius to remove spyware and malware.

Remove any DLL errors, runtime errors, or registry errors - Use a program such as Registry Easy, Registry Fix, or Registry Genius to remove these errors.

Defragment your hard disk - This is a very important step. Use the Windows Disk Defragmenter (included in EVERY version of Microsoft Windows) to do this. Ensure that you clean out viruses, spyware, malware, and errors before doing this.

You’re at your computer happily typing along when suddenly your window closes and a pop-up box appears. A wave of emotions wash over you, starting with confusion and ultimately ending in sheer frustration: you’ve just encountered a Windows runtime error.

In most cases you aren’t even aware of what you were doing at the time of the error. Because it can happen so quickly, and typically results in the programs you had open closing, it can be difficult to remember exactly what you were doing and when. Not only will you have lost any work/information that was open, but you have also likely lost your ability to properly diagnose what caused the runtime error.

What is a Windows Runtime Error?

Like most errors that one will experience when using Microsoft Windows, a runtime error usually has more than one meaning. However, it typically results during the execution of a program. What’s interesting about a Windows runtime error, however, is that it is actually a “bug” that was put in place by the program developer to act as a “fail safe”, so to speak.

A runtime error terminates the program before the program crashes quite dramatically on its own.

What Causes a Windows Runtime Error?

There are a myriad of things that can cauase a runtime error. However, the most common causes are:

A conflict with another program that is currently running - If a program is attempting to reference files or information that is also being referenced by another program it may cause the program you are using to become unstable. The result? A Windows runtime error.

Software instablity or bugs - If the program you are using has not been optimized properly, or has an issue with the enviornment that it is operating in (such as other programs, hardware, etc.) it may result in a runtime error.

Computer virus, malware, or spyware - Aside from using up excessive amount of system resources, malicious software (viruses, spyware, malware) can have a profoundly negative impact on your computer and how it operates. Viruses are one of the biggest reasons your computer may experience a runtime error.

Lack of system memory or resources - If a program becomes memory starved (unable to access free memory, or your computer does not have any memory available for it to access) it become unstable. This, of course, results in a runtime error.

How Can You Fix a Windows Runtime Error?

Given that runtime errors are caused by malicious software or program conflicts the solution comes down to rectifying one (or both) of those conditions.

Malicious software is easy enough to get rid of. Installing an anti-virus software, or the excellent AntiSpyware 2009 (see our review of Anti Spyware 2009 here), is usually enough to get rid of most forms of viruses, malware, and spyware. It’s important to note that an anti-virus generally will not be very good at removing spyware. If spyware is your problem, something like AntiSpyware 2009 is going to be the ideal solution (if you’re unsure if spyware is the problem AntiSpyware 2009 will do a free scan for you).

Now, program conflicts is a bit more tricky to resolve. Runtime errors caused by program conflicts could be the result of one of many different types of conflict: DLL conflicts, shared file conflicts, read/write conflicts, etc. If you aren’t a computer genius your options are, unfortunately, a little limited to either hiring a professional or using a registry cleaner, such as Registry Easy, to resolve your problem for you.

We recommend using a registry cleaner as they are much less expensive than having a computer repair specialist fix your computer for you.

DLL errors are, for the most part, some of the most annoying errors you’re likely to experience as a Windows user. Sure, Windows registry errors are about as much fun as being punched in the gut, but when it comes to sheer frustration and annoyance DLL errors take the cake.
If you’re like most (if you’re reading this you are) the chances are darn good that you have absolutely no idea what a DLL error is or how the heck you can fix a DLL error. Well, thankfully for you, there are options that exist that can help you identify and get rid of that DLL error once and for all.

What is a Windows DLL File?

A Windows DLL file is also known by the full version of its acronym: dynamic link library. Windows DLL’s are libraries that contain code, programs, or other functions that are referenced by Microsoft Windows as well as other programs installed on your computer.

Windows DLL files typically have a .dll or .exe extension.

What Causes Windows DLL Errors?

DLL errors are a tricky lot. Generally speaking you won’t be the direct cause of the DLL error, so it’s impossible to lay blame to a specific instance or program. DLL errors are usually the result of programs being installed and then uninstalled (though the uninstallation is never usually “complete”), resulting in old versions of DLL files being present, abandoned DLL files being present, and shared DLL files being modified and/or corrupted.

People experiencing DLL errors, no matter how minor, will commonly refer to their wonderful DLL experience as “DLL hell“. DLL hell was coined due to the average person’s total inability to find the source of the errors nor find a result. DLL hell is frustrating, especially because you may find yourself literally swimming in errors with absolutely no rhyme or reason as to why.

Chances are good that if you are experiencing Windows DLL errors it is due to one of the following:

A DLL file was replaced by a newer or legacy version during a program installation or uninstallation - Many DLL files are shared among programs. Often, when a new program in installed, it will replace program-specific DLL files with a version compiled in the installation executable. This can, and often does, cause conflicts that will arise when a program attempts to reference that DLL file.

A shared DLL file was deleted during a program uninstallation - Though not as common now as it was during the days of Windows 95/98, there are instances when a program will delete a DLL file during uninstallation that is shared with other programs. Obviously, the missing DLL file will cause errors when a program attempts to reference it.

Malfunctioning and/or damaged hardware - This is especially true of your hard disk. If your disk drive is corrupting files or the system registry it may land you in DLL hell faster than you can say “golly, I might just be in DLL hell”.

A virus, spyware, or malware has run amok on your computer - This is becoming increasingly more common. Any malicious software that is having its way with your computer can send you into DLL hell in an instant.

How to Identify a Windows DLL Error

Fortunately for those in “the know”, identifying a Windows DLL error is actually pretty easy. DLL problems tend to identify themselves as such (”there is an error with FILENAME.dll”, for example) or fall into a certain trend:

“The program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.” - This is indicative of a DLL problem.

“This application could not start because the following file is missing or currupt: c:\DIRECTORYNAME\FILENAME.dll” - This one speaks for itself.

Programs randomly freeze and/or crash - You may or may not receive an error dialog box associated with this. This is less obvious that it’s a DLL error, but the chances are good that it is.

Alternatively, if you are experiencing weird behavior or errors, scanning your computer with a registry cleaner (such as Registry Easy, Registry Fix, or Registry Genius — all will scan your computer for free) will let you know in a pretty cut and dry fashion if you have DLL problems or not.

How to Cure Your Windows DLL Error Woes

Once you’ve determined that you are experiencing Windows DLL problems your next step is to fix them. Here you really only have two options:

Replace the Windows DLL file causing the problem - If you have determined that “FILENAME.dll” is currupt, replacing “FILENAME.dll” with a clean version of the file should cure your DLL error. However, chances are good that you don’t have the technical capability to identify which specific file is causing the error. This leads us, in part, to option number two…

Use a registry cleaner to fix your Windows DLL errors - A good registry cleaner (see below for our top three recommended programs) will scan your computer (for free) and identify any and all errors that your computer may have- including DLL errors. If you want to fix your errors, however, you will have to actually purchase a license of the program. However, once you purchase a license that program is generally good for as long as you own that computer. Most programs cost under $50 and are, like an anti-virus, an essential investment in keeping your computer running smoothly.

Microsoft Windows, while a fantastic operating system that has practically defined the way modern computing is conducted, is also rife with errors and ailments. After all, given its sheer complexity, how could one expect it to be perfect? Windows registry errors, however, are the most deceptive of the error-causing lot. Fittingly, they are also the most frustrating to diagnose.

However, not all is lost, as once you know the telltale signs of a Windows registry error it is a rather simple process to diagnose, find, and repair.

What Is a Windows Registry Error?

The Windows registry is a database that stores all sorts of important information about your computer. It manages all of the settings that are used and referenced by all of the software, hardware, and peripherals connected to your computer. It also “remembers” all of your preferences and individual program settings.

As you can imagine, the Windows registry is not something you want to have errors in (regular scans using a program such as Registry Easy or Registry Fix will go a long way in preventing registry errors). However, it is almost guaranteed that you will encounter a registry error or three if you use your computer in any significant way at all.

The telltale sign that the error you are experiencing is the infamous pop-up window that informs you of the error (but in actuality provides little to no information about the error).

Typical Causes of a Windows Registry Error

There are a million reasons why your car could break down, just as there are a million things that may cause registry errors. Anything from improperly uninstalling a program to installing programs that conflict with each other can cause a registry error. Unfortunately, you won’t even know that the error is occurring until after you experience it. You may have created a registry error months ago and not even realize it!

The most common causes of Windows registry errors are (in no particular order):

Invalid registry entry value(s) - Many registry entries are given a “value”, a numeric value that defines how the registry entry operates. If the entry ‘NO_ERRORS’ is set to ‘1′, for example, you won’t receive any computer errors! Hooray! But, if the entry ‘NO_ERRORS’ is set to ‘0′ you can expect a host of problems! Obviously, the entry ‘NO_ERRORS’ doesn’t actually exist.

Improper editing of the registry - Before you get any ideas it’s important that you understand something: unless you are an experienced programmer you have absolutely no reason to attempt to edit the registry… so DON’T. That is all.

Corrupted program installations or uninstallations - Almost all applications will reference and modify the Windows registry during installation or uninstallation. If something happens during an installation/uninstallation to currupt the process you may be left with a mangled registry as a result.

Malicious software or scripts - We may never understand their motives, but for whatever reason some less-than-lovable people will (and have) create programs/scripts that are designed to negatively modify your system registry. These programs are often misrepresented as desirable programs (such as a popular file sharing program).

Viruses, spyware, and/or malware - Similar to the scripts mentioned above, viruses/spyware/malware may modify your system registry to suit their purposes.

How to Repair a Windows Registry Error

If you are experiencing symptoms of a damaged registry (a slow, sluggish computer, random application freezing and crashes, pop-up errors, blue screen of death, etc.) you may feel that your computer is a write-off. However, chances are good that your registry can be easily repaired.

Aside from taking your computer to a computer repair specialist there are typically two ways to repair your registry: manually (not recommended), or using a registry repair program (such as Registry Fix, Registry Easy, or Registry Genius). Repairing your registry manually is free, but it should only be attempted by someone who is experienced and qualified to be modifying the Windows registry. If you are reading this article there is a 99.99% chance that the person before-mentioned is not you.

A registry repair program typically costs less than $50 and will automatically scan your computer for any registry errors (along with a host of other errors and ailments your computer may be experiencing) and then repair them. 90% of the time a registry repair program will be all you need to get your computer back on track.

Unsure of which registry repair program is right for you? Read our reviews of the following programs:

Registry Easy - Highly recommended.

Registry Fix - Also highly recommended.

AntiSpyware 2009 is a dedicated spyware removal tool. The 2009 version adds some of the latest and greatest spyware threats to its database, ensuring that you are properly protected. Though lacking a comprehensive error repair suite, AntiSpyware has always been about one thing: finding, and eliminating spyware.

Does AntiSpyware 2009 stack up to its competition? Keep reading to find out.

Our Review of AntiSpyware 2009:

Spyware is one of the most annoying, inconvenient, ridiculous pains in the butt you’ll ever experience. Once it sinks its slimy tentacles into your computer you’ll have the joy of experiencing a whole range of side effects: random window opening/closing, pop-up advertisements, system crashes, and more. Does this sound like a good party to you? No, and not to us either.

That’s where AntiSpyware 2009 comes in. Recently updated for 2009, AntiSpyware 2009 has been designed to be the premier spyware removal tool available online. Users can download the application and run a system-scan for free, only opting to buy AntiSpyware 2009 if the program is actually able to detect and remove spyware off of their computer.

AntiSpyware 2009 is automatically updated to ensure that your computer is always protected. In fact, it was updated immediately after we installed it on our test computer (see our testing procedures). We knew that we had two different key loggers and seven trojan horses on our test computer, along with a rootkit and plenty of adware. AntiSpyware 2009 found and removed them all in approximately ten minutes.

Not bad.

Our only complaints regarding AntiSpyware 2009 is that it doesn’t offer any other error repair or registry cleaning functions. This is strictly a spyware-only program, but at least it’s darn good at that.

Errors AntiSpyware 2009 Can Repair

AntiSpyare 2009 is not an error-repair program, so it will not repair any errors caused by your registry, invalid or currupt files, or otherwise. However, it will find and eliminate spyware and adware (as well as the errors they cause). AntiSpyware 2009 specifically looks for:

Adware, Spyware, and Nagware.

Trojan horses and other viruses.

Malware/dialers.

Worms, key loggers, or browser hijackers.

Data miners.

Root kits and other malicious embedded software.

Conclusion:

If you are having adware, malware, or spyware issues there is no better solution than AntiSpyware 2009. Compatible with all major versions of Windows (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista), AntiSpyware 2009 will almost certainly eliminate the headaches that come with a spyware infestation. Highly recommended.

Registry Easy is an easy to use system cleanup tool that gets the job done quickly, reliably, and for much less than a computer repair shop would charge. We are very impressed with Registry Easy. For more information on how Registry Easy was tested, see our testing procedures.

Our Review of Registry Easy:

There isn’t a lot that Registry Easy can’t do to speed up your computer and make things work faster again. Right on the main page of their website they list the myriad of ailments the program can handle- it’s a LOT.

We downloaded Registry Easy on both our clean computer and our test computer. Registry Easy, like Registry Fix, allows you to do a free system scan prior to purchasing the software to see if you actually need it. On our clean computer it detected ONE error, and on our test computer it detected 8,421 errors- very well done, and very accurate.

After you have purchased your license (the price varies from time to time, but it is always under $50) you will be able to scan your computer and automatically (automagically) fix any errors that the program detects in real time. It’s very easy to use and very simple to understand.
